The monetization process is based on a revenue sharing system in which creators are paid through Shorts ads shown between videos in the viewer’s feed. With this revenue ad sharing, the total amount is distributed to music partners and then creators for their individual performances. Let’s understand this a little better:

Since ads are the main source of revenue for creators, YouTube sells ad space to companies so that they can display their ads between videos on the Shorts feed.
- Revenue Pooling
Creators only get a share of the revenue generated as revenue is pooled and distributed between companies and creators. YouTube first pools the total revenue collected from Shorts ads and then distribute a percentage of it among creators.
- Initial Fund Allocation
Now the initial fund allocation process begins in which YouTube distributes the revenue to creators’ pool and the remaining for music licensing costs. If a creator has not used any music, then most of the revenue gets transferred to the creator pool, helping them increase their earnings. But if the creator used music to create Shorts video, then the revenue is split between creators and music partners. So you see, the YouTube monetization rule is different for Shorts than it is for long videos.
- Music Fund Allocation
Based on the number of tracks the creator has used, the revenue is distributed accordingly. If a creator has used one track, then half revenue is given to music partner and half to the creator. If the creator has used two music tracks, then 2/3 is given for licensing and the remaining 1/3 goes to the creator.For example, if total revenue generated from Shorts ads is $100,00 and 20% used for music tracks, then $90,000 is for the creator pool and rest $10,000 is used for licencing costs.
- Creator Fund Allocation
From the creator pool, then a percentage of earnings is then allocated to each creator based on the total number of views they have managed to get on their videos. For example, if a creator managed to get 5% views on their Shorts, they will be allocated 5% of earnings from the creator pool.
- Fund Payment
The creator gets paid 45% of the revenue allocated to them and the remaining 55% is retained by the platform itself.
However, creators who have not yet accepted the monetization module are not included in the creator pool. The views generated by their videos can be retained by YouTube or used to cover licensing costs. Also, Shorts uploaded using tracks from music partners is also not included in the creator pool.
